Exclusive from AsiansUK.com - The UK Asian Social Hub!

Nominate your community heroes
Asian Achievers Awards 2013

Members of the public invited to nominate inspirational characters for the ‘People’s Awards’

Nominations are now open for the public to nominate inspiring members of their communities for the esteemed Asian Achievers Awards 2013. Taking place on 6th September at Grosvenor House Hotel, the Asian Achievers Awards will recognise the outstanding work of individuals from across all businesses and professions and acknowledge the accomplishments of the finest of the UK’s Asian community.
Hosted by Asian Business Publications Ltd (ABPL), publishers of respected newspapers, Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar, the event is now into its 13th year and continues to build momentum and stature. The ceremony will welcome a high profile guest list of dignitaries, cross party politicians, celebrities and high achievers from the Asian community.

The Asian Achievers Awards salute individuals who are singularly responsible for bringing
the Asian community to the centre stage of British life, and celebrate the exceptional and exemplary achievements of the community members that are truly inspirational.  The coveted Awards were first envisioned as a standard of excellence that would create role models and encourage younger generations to follow in their footsteps
Asian Achievers Award categories comprise: Sports Personality of the Year; Business Person of the Year; Professional of the Year; Achievement in Community Service; Achievement in Media, Arts and Culture; Award for Entertainment; Woman of the Year; Young Entrepreneur of the Year; Uniformed and Civil Services; International Personality of the Year; and Lifetime Achievement Award.
Comments Mr. CB Patel, Chairman, Editor, Publisher ABPL Group,
“Asian Achievers Awards is much more than any normal awards. It is unique, it is all-inclusive and it is innovative.
Unique because we receive nominations from our subscribers, readers and member of the public. Fair because an independent panel of judges select the winners from the nominations received.
Innovative because first, we give 'unsung heroes' from the community an opportunity to be appreciated for their actual talents. Second, we select an exclusive theme for every year's ceremony. This year it is celebrating the 'Power and Contributions of Women.' Third, we raise funds for a sponsored charity - that promotes the right values and helps the underprivileged to get a better opportunity or footing. It is our way of doing something meaningful for the greater community. AAA has helped to raise millions of pounds for sponsored charities over the last 12 years.”

Nominations can be registered via Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar newspapers, as well as online at: www.asianachieversawards.com

Chelsea Football Club and Sporting Equals UK unveils four footballing champions

Exclusive from AsiansUK.com - The UK Asian Social Hub!

Chelsea Football Club and Sporting Equals UK
unveils four Asian footballing champions

Sporting Equals a UK wide equality charity that promotes more ethnic minority people into sport were proud to support this year's ground-breaking Asian Star initiative led by the Chelsea FC Foundation. http://www.sportingequals.org.uk/

Asian Star is the first scheme of its kind undertaken by a professional club and is designed to increase Asian participation at all levels of the game. It gives the opportunity for children to compete to win a season long placement within the Chelsea FC Foundation's Football Development Centre. The Asian Star initiative also aims to help address the under-representation of the Asian community in sport, by offering opportunities for the Asian community to find out about coaching and other ways to get involved in the national game.

Nearly 400 Asian youngsters gathered at the European Champion's training ground in Cobham, Surrey. Participants competed in under 9's to under  12 age groups and were judged on a series of matches and tests specifically designed and used by the Chelsea Academy to examine speed, skill and ability.

Arun Kang, Chief Executive Officer of Sporting Equals, said
“Sporting Equals are delighted to be working with Chelsea FC Foundation and supporting Asian Star 2013. There is currently an underrepresentation of Asian faces in football and Chelsea  understand the moral, social and commercial value of growing Asian talent in the UK. Chelsea has shown their commitment to finding players from Asian backgrounds, opening up their youth programmes to the whole community to increase participation at all levels of the game. Sporting Equals work across sport to promote ethnic diversity at all levels and this project can be replicated to help other sports engage untapped markets”

A pre event launch was set up by Sporting Equals in Southall, London which has a large Asian community, to support young players in preparation for the main event at Cobham.  The pre event also included an inspirational talk from Sporting Equals Ambassador and successful businessman, Peter Virdee. Peter Virdee said
"Chelsea has really changed the game by opening up their training ground to give the chance for the Asian community to demonstrate their skills. I am particularly supportive of Asian Star as it not only gives the opportunity for the successful applicants to win a yearlong contract but also raises awareness and encouragement for the community to get involved in football alongside one of the biggest clubs in the world."

Paran Gill, Muhaymin Hoque, Marco Randhawa and Musa Qureshi were crowned champions in the under 12 under 11 and under 9 categories respectively, whose prizes were presented by Sporting Equals Ambassadors Peter Virdee,  and Pakistani International Kash Siddiqi and previous Asian Star winner Sam Khan who now plays at the Birmingham City academy.

Online 3D Art Exhibition to Showcase the stunning art of Balraj Khanna

Exclusive from AsiansUK.com - The UK Asian Social Hub!

 Exclusive Online 3D Art Exhibition
to Showcase the Stunning Art of Balraj Khanna

During the past few months, the Indian art market has enjoyed a boost in both exposure and sales. This is due in part to Sotheby’s recent sale of the Amaya Collection, in March 2013, which featured 43 pieces of art, resulting in almost $7m in revenues.  The increased exposure and results are a result of the growing new crowd of art collectors.

The Internet has also played a role in the growing market for Indian art. Collections exhibited in online galleries and sold on online auctions are drawing large numbers of interested seasoned buyers, as well as a crowd of new generation collectors, who often purchase artwork based on a digital image. A recent study by Hiscox revealed that as high as 89 percent of surveyed galleries have sold various pieces to clients through the Internet, and surprisingly, many collectors were willing to spend as much as £50,000 on their online art purchases.

The Indian Art Centre is one of the galleries that features exclusive online art exhibitions. Their innovative use of cutting-edge technology allows users to have a unique 3D experience in the comfort of their own homes. As collectors scroll through a dazzling panoramic display, they can select various works of art that will pop-up and allow them a closer inspection.

Beginning June 6 and continuing on through June 16, 2013, a stunning exhibition featuring works from celebrated artist and author Balraj Khanna will be online. The exhibition is titled “A Journey of His Own” and contains pieces created during the last 50 years of his distinguished career. This exclusive online pop-up exhibition promises to be very successful.

Sue Hubbard (The Independent), recently had this to say about Khanna's work,
“There is within this work the implicit belief that art should be both spiritual and uplifting. With its luminous colours and magical shapes, this is work that would sit well in public spaces to create moments of regeneration. You really don’t have to know much about art to appreciate the glowing colours and to understand that Balraj Khanna’s subjects are joy, harmony and the pleasure of living in the visual world.”

The dates of the online pop-up exhibition are aligned with the Modern and Contemporary Art auctions organised at the main international auction houses. Each piece that is featured will be available for purchase, and art collectors are in for a treat because a highly anticipated series of never-before-seen small format works is going to be available to the public during the event.

Those interested in Khanna’s art work can register at www.ajourneyofhisown.com to receive a catalogue of the exhibition and they will also receive notification when the show is live.  Interested parties are also able to arrange private viewings of the collection at the artist's studio in London.

Since Balraj Khanna was once described by Bryan Robertson as
“one of the most distinguished painters living in England,”
the high level of interest in his online pop-up art exhibition is not surprising. With talented artists like Khanna are at the forefront of the modern and contemporary Indian art movement, it seems rather likely that the demand for Asian art will continue to grow and prosper.

Asians and the Fall of Gold!

Exclusive from AsiansUK.com - The UK Asian Social Hub!

The fall of Gold!

Why Asians are no longer enthralled
with the Precious metal
About one hundred years ago, John Ruskin told the story of a man who boarded a ship carrying his entire wealth in a large, bag of gold coins. A terrible storm came up a few days into the voyage and the alarm went off to abandon ship. Strapping the bag around his waist, the man went up on deck, jumped overboard, and promptly sank to the bottom of the sea.
Asks Ruskin: "Now, as he was sinking, had he the gold? Or had the gold him?"'
Human fascination with Gold, the precious yellow not necessarily pretty metal (well, at least not to many) is not something new. Countless legends have been woven around attaining it; tales have been told and retold on how people have gone to various measures, even that of inhumanity, to own it. It is used by females to adorn themselves during weddings, as offerings to Gods and as secure investments. Among the South Asian community, this ‘gold’ rush is an even more interesting phenomenon. Even something to be proud of, since this phenomenon is primarily driven by females and their undying love for it. Across Asia, gold holds a vital element of fascination. In countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal with China dominating the market, gold is very much in demand by women who love to wear it by the kilos.
However, it is safe to say that it is India which has driven the gold global demand like no other country. Indian brides are known to wear a lot of gold ornaments on their wedding days. While the rest of the world may have moved on from gold, Asians still seem spellbound by it. Or so it seemed until now. Going by recent trends, things seem to be changing. For second and third generation of South Asians settled outside their country of origin, the appeal of this shiny yellow metal seems to be receding. Cross-cultural marriages and assimilation into international cultures has brought about a shift in people’s attitude towards acquiring Gold. And towards more sophisticated choices like diamonds and pearls. Even artificial jewellery or fashion jewellery as it is often called is making inroads into fashion choices. Analysts suggest that the high price of gold may have driven customers towards other choices like diamonds.
But the vital question still remains: Can we say goodbye to those times when Gold held the centre stage in Asian lives?
As the price of Gold steadily falls, with experts considering this fall to be the largest decline in gold prices in the last 30 years, Asians seems to be looking for other options. Second generation Asians settled abroad prefer elegant designs, even if they are in gold. Diamonds, rubies and other precious stones encrusted in white gold and platinum have become increasingly popular with brides. Bridal wear is now complemented with interesting fashion choices be it jewellery, sequined clutch bags or tiaras.
For many centuries, the hoarding of gold was seen as a sign of financial security for females. The girls’s parents started to buy and keep gold ready for when they would be married. "The gold will show off the prosperity and the stand of the family in the society," says Indian wedding planner Divya Chauhan.

It was said that the amount of gold that a woman brings to a marriage gave her financial control and power in her new life. It was a symbol that she deserves to be taken seriously; that she has her own assets aside from her husband's. But with Asian females now empowered and independent with careers and financial freedom, this notion no longer holds true.
There are many investment options in the modern world the stock market and real estate to name a few. As for the females, there are umpteen choices for South Asian ladies looking towards Diamonds and Pearls for bigger occasions and choosing fashion jewellery for everyday wear.
What do we need gold for?
