The Bird & The Fish by Saima Mir

Exclusive from AsiansUK.com - The UK Asian Social Hub!

The Bird & The Fish by Saima Mir
I wrote The Bird & The Fish in two parts.

Here’s Part 1.

There once was a kingdom whose people did not like change. In this kingdom lived a girl with olive skin and bright, brilliant dreams, and a boy with ocean blue eyes and a passion for adventure.

It was inevitable that this boy and this girl would fall in love.

And that’s when the trouble began.

Together, the boy and girl dreamed wide-eyed dreams of travelling to faraway places. The girl wanted to read all the books in the world and learn everything there was to know about the stars and the sun and the moon. And the boy wanted to chart every sea.

When the townspeople heard of the young couples’ talk and plans and dreams, they summoned The Council of Status Quo.

“We don’t like change!” they said. “Such talk of travel and books and love is dangerous.”

“It will lead to all manner of chaos!” shouted the men.

“We don’t mind what the girl and the boy do in their own home you understand… but soon our children too will want to try!” cried the women.

One old man, who had loved once but not been brave enough for true love, listened quietly. Using his stick to steady himself, he leaned into the crowd and whispered, “What harm will it do us, their dreaming such dreams?”

But like most words of good sense his voice was drowned out by shouts of dissent.

The townspeople hatched a plan and summoned an old crone who lived in a rock by the sea.

Bent over double, the crone hobbled in.

The townsfolk pleaded for her help, “This couple must die! They want to bring strange new ways to our land.”

The crone glanced at the old man who had spoken up for the boy and girl. She remembered how they too had been young once and how the old man’s love for her had awoken magic in her fingertips. But the magic had frightened the townsfolk, and they had banished her to the rock where she had hardened her heart.

Stooped low, the crone looked at the boy with blue eyes and the girl with olive skin, then turned as the townsfolk’s shouts rose higher and higher.

“He wants to chart the seas! She wants to reach the stars! Why do they want such things when none of us do?”

The crone pointed her bony finger and uttered a word, a magical word. The crowd silenced itself, fear running through them. Words are more powerful than weapons, you see, they can start and end wars easily. But sometimes the most powerful thing is a look, a glance, an eyebrow raised. This the old man knew, and as he stepped forward and the crowd stepped back, the old crone at once reconsidered.

She turned her head and she looked at the sea. Then she turned it again and looked up at the sky. She muttered some words to herself and in a flash the girl was gone and the boy was in the sea.

The crone had shown as much mercy as her hardened heart would allow. But at least she had tried, which should be enough for anyone.

The townspeople looked over and gasped. The boy was a silvery Fish. He could travel the seas and do as he pleased.

A feather dropped to the ground and the olive-skinned girl soared up, a brightly-coloured bird of paradise. She could now fly high and reach for the stars.

But dreams are empty without love, and the Bird and the Fish yearned to be together. After all, it was together that they had woven their wishes.

The Bird dived deep into the sea to find her Fish. She coughed and spluttered as the sea salt dried her eyes. She tried and she tried but it was no good. Tired and hungry she collapsed on an island in the middle of the sea.

Watching his love’s brave attempts, the Fish swam and he jumped and he tried to fly. His fins were no use in the air, and when he landed on the island his scales began to dry. Worried he would not survive; Bird used her beak to nudge her love back into the sea.

There are fish that can fly and birds that can swim, but not our Bird and not our Fish.

The sun it started to set, its rays glinting on the ocean. The two lovers gazed at each other sadly across the water.

If you want to know how it ends then download it here…

The Bird & The Fish is a modern-day fairy tale for all ages and cultures.

British Bangladeshi Power 100 - BBPower100

Exclusive from AsiansUK.com - The UK Asian Social Hub!

PRESS RELEASE – Immediate release

LAUNCH OF 2013 BRITISH BANGLADESHI POWER 100

The 2013 British Bangladeshi Power100 (“BBPower 100”) will be unveiled on Tuesday 22 January 2013 in the Commonwealth Room of the House of Commons at 19.00.
Special guests at the reception will include a senior government minister and members of the 2013 list.
The 2013 list is the second publication of the BBPower100 which is a celebration of leading British Bangladeshi figures who are helping shape Britain for the better with their ideas, example, talent and success.
The BBPower 100 was created by Abdal Ullah and Ayesha Qureshi MBE. This year’s list will consist of 100 people and organisations across 20 categories. The list is independently judged and ranked by a panel lead by Iqbal Wahhab OBE and Syed Nahas Pasha.
The 2013 BBPower 100 will also celebrate and recognise the contribution of the British Bangladeshi community to the success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Abdal Ullah, Founder of BBPower100 said:

“The publication of the 2013 BBPower 100 promises to reveal more talent, inspiration and success from the British Bangladeshi community. We aim to highlight and celebrate the strengths and dynamism of this often overlooked community.”

Ayesha Qureshi MBE, Editor of BBPower100 said:
“We’re really proud that this year’s BBPower 100 will recognise the contribution of the British Bangladeshi community to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. From helping to win the bid to mesmerising the world in the opening ceremony, with the many gamesmakers and torchbearers  in between, this small but vibrant community has amazing 2012 Games stories with which to inspire the next generation.”

The Year Writers Are Going to Take Responsibility Again

The Year Writers Are Going to Take Responsibility Again

"Dr Max Malik is a medical doctor and an award winning writer, as well as an established expert on ”The Clash of Civilistions’ and also a commentator on international relations between the West and the Muslim World."

Dr Max Malik

If there were no writing then there would be no collective memory. No shared humanity. No way to relate our experiences to the great stories: no Holy Books, no warnings of Big Brother, and no Romeo and Juliet. No way to relate to love. Perhaps love itself would be different. Certainly mankind would not be the same.

Gangnam style can entertain and appeals to something in us that needs easy entertainment but Gangnam style will never change the world. Or someone’s life. Or even an attitude.

From my experiences as a doctor and a writer researching ‘The Clash of Civilisations’, I have come to the unavoidable conclusion that soon, you – the majority – will be destroyed by a conquering swarthy mass of Islamification or become enslaved under European hegemony. Britain and perhaps Europa herself will lie panting defenceless before the invading hordes. That is what some in our society would have you believe. The swarming masses and their weird ideas must be finished off before they undermine our civilisation. Therefore the most urgent directive seems to be that the West must destroy the scary terrorists from inside and out; the main threat may be from those who are set on ending liberal western civilisation. Both seem intent on striking a deathblow: either scenario has its own burdens. However it is certain that change is gathering momentum. A storm that will challenge and destroy the current status quo. The white liberal majority will be to blame. By definition in a democracy it is the majority that takes the responsibility.

Why do writers matter? This a time of financial crisis: because we have made the moneylenders the high priests. Hence we are responsible for a divided society that is full of unhappy individuals who are too ashamed to own up to a trashed common culture. Writers need to not only inform the debate but change attitudes.

Thinkers are meaningless unless they write. Only writers influence. They create new thoughts and change minds from beyond the grave. Every revolution is political in the broadest sense:

‘She walks in beauty like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies’, is a political work. Lord Byron died fighting for the Greeks against the Turks. Every piece of writing that moves is beauty, a revolution of the heart.

Writing can be fun, of course it can and it should. Even on board The Starship Enterprise there exists a Prime Directive: no one is to interfere in the lives and societies of others.

As writers we have a Prime Directive: to interfere in the lives of others. To discomfort the days of humanity, to ensure they do not sleep easy on their comfort mattresses but instead have nights of blissless insomnia. Writers must build a cohesive memory, and create a collective consciousness, by asking the right question. That is the only job of a writer.

What type of writers matter? What types of writers are dangerous? The publicly masturbatory types? The self-flagellatory types? The sh*t ones?

The truth of the matter is most writers will not matter. Some will matter and some will matter more than almost all the others. Those will be the ones who come seriously to the blank page.

And for a very few it is of no consequence whether they write about aliens on Zog or essays about the Zeitgeist; they will make a difference.

I became a writer because I had to write. To write means only one thing: to ask the most relevant question.

My question right now is: when are writers going to take responsibility again?

 About Brit Writers Awards

Brit Writers is an exciting initiative to encourage and inspire unpublished and self-published writers of all ages.

Brit Writers was launched in 2009 by Imran Akram, the founder of the now internationally acclaimed Muslim Writers’ Awards (MWA).

Having achieved great things with MWA in just a few years, Brit Writers is now sharing the energy, excitement and community-building potential of a huge writing competition with the rest of the world. In line with our vision, we’ve created an international writing awards event that accepts entries from people of all backgrounds and all ages. Our first ever competition attracted over 21,000 entries from Brits in 92 different countries.

Our inaugural ceremony took place on Thursday 15 July 2010 at The 02, London, where nine previously unpublished writers were honoured with prizes. Catherine Cooper, a former teacher from Shropshire, was our Unpublished Writer of the Year, securing £10,000 and a publishing deal for her children’s novel The Golden Acorn. The winner of the Unpubished Writer of the Year 2011 was Georgina Kirk for her lovely book, Once Upon a Princess… You can watch the awards evening from our homepage.

Submissions for 2012 are now closed. Not only do we want you to share your writing with the rest of the world, but we’d love to reward you for doing so – with international acclaim for the shortlisted entrants and a fabulous £10,000 prize for the overall winner.
